    Don't Miss the Moment!

My wife once saved us from being stranded in the Arizona desert.

And I made fun of her for it.

We were driving across the country when she bought six enormous bottles of water.

I said, "What are we doing, opening a swimming pool?"

Four hours later, our car overheated.

Guess who suddenly looked like a genius?

This Sunday, Jesus tells a story about ten bridesmaids waiting for a wedding.

Five brought extra oil for their lamps. Five didn't.

And when the bridegroom finally arrived, only five were ready.

But here's what I find fascinating.

Jesus ends the story with two words:

    "Keep awake!"

    Not "Be afraid."

    Not "Predict the future."

    But "Pay attention!"

And after this week's election, I think that's especially important.

Winners need humility. Losers need encouragement.

And all of us need to remember that voting for someone who promises to love our neighbors isn't the same as actually loving them.

Because God is showing up all around us.

In the hungry. The lonely. The stranger. The person who needs a little kindness.

The question isn't whether God is showing up.

The question is whether we're paying attention.

    So keep your lamps burning.

    Don't miss the moment.
