Did you know today is actually called Spy Wednesday?
It’s named for that pivot point in the Holy Week where Judas starts playing both sides, spying for the authorities and eventually selling out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
It’s a gritty story, but let’s get real: betrayal isn’t just some ancient plot point. It’s a temptation we all face. It’s that whisper to take the easy way out or trade our values for a little bit of comfort or "silver."
Every Wednesday morning, I joined about a dozen other people to stand vigil outside the ICE office in Southfield. Why? Because we’re calling on our society not to betray its own ideals. If we say we believe in: Fairness, Justice, Equality for all, and The Golden Rule (treating others how we want to be treated) ...then we have to actually live that. Otherwise, it's just talk.
Holy Week is the ultimate masterclass in staying true. Jesus stands up for these exact ideals. Even when he’s being sold out by a friend, he doesn't flinch. He stays true to his convictions, takes the hit, and suffers the consequences. But spoiler alert: that integrity is exactly what leads to the ultimate victory.
The takeaway? Be true to yourself. Hold onto your ideals. Stick to your convictions. Because as Judas shows us, betrayal is a dead end—it’s always the losing path.
